Silk triangle scarves, light and polished

Silk is the dressy triangle: a neckerchief at an open collar, a scarf over the hair on a sunny day, a flash of print on a bag strap. It is light rather than warm, so it shines in spring, summer and early fall.

The short answer

Check the listing says 100% silk (satin is a weave, often polyester). For the neck and hair, a scarf around 20 to 35 inches on the long side ties neatly; a square folded into a triangle works the same way. Silk slides, so it suits knots at the neck and ascots better than all-day hair styles, unless you add a grip underneath.

Silk or satin

Read the fiber line, not the product name. "Silk feel", "silky" and "satin" often mean polyester, which is cheaper, easy to wash and fine for hair, but less breathable. Real silk is lighter and drapes more softly, and needs gentler care.

Best knots for silk

Silk is smooth, so knots that sit on the neck hold better than knots that rely on friction. Try the neckerchief, the ascot and the bandana headband. For the hair, see triangle hair scarf styles. Inoui Editions, a scarf maker, shows the triangle knot from a folded square.

Care

Silk makers generally advise a short soak in cool water with a silk safe detergent, no wringing, rolling in a towel and drying flat out of the sun. See how to wash a scarf, and follow the care label first.

Questions people ask

Is satin the same as silk?

No. Satin is a weave with a glossy face; it can be made from silk, but many satin scarves are polyester. A listing that says 100% silk, or names a silk weave such as twill or charmeuse with silk fiber, is silk.

Are silk triangle scarves warm?

Not very. Silk adds a light layer at the neck and blocks a breeze, but for real cold choose wool, cashmere or a knit triangle.

How do I keep a silk scarf from slipping on my hair?

Tie a firmer knot, wear it over a velvet or textured headband, or use bobby pins at the sides. The American Cancer Society notes velvet bands help keep scarves from slipping.
