Triangle scarf knitting patterns, where to start

A triangle is a friendly first project: no shaping to count beyond one increase, and you stop when it is big enough. Here is how the patterns differ, what to buy, and where to find good free ones.

The short answer

Start with a point-up pattern: cast on a few stitches at the point and increase at both edges every row or every other row until it is wide enough. Use a smooth worsted or chunky wool on needles the yarn label suggests, and a circular needle once the rows get long. The free Easiest Triangle on Ravelry is written this way.

Questions people ask

How much yarn do I need for a triangle scarf?

It depends on the yarn weight and size. The notes to the free Easiest Triangle pattern put a neck scarf at about 50 grams, a tiny shawl at about 100 grams and a proper shawl at about 300 grams. Always check your pattern.

What is the easiest triangle scarf to knit?

A garter or stockinette triangle worked from the point up with an increase at each edge. Garter stitch lies flat; stockinette curls at the edges unless it has a border.

Can I sell scarves I knit from a free pattern?

It depends on the designer’s terms, which are usually on the pattern page. Some allow small-scale sales of finished items with credit; check before you sell.
